INFORMATION

Directions:

(1) Each group will need to bring a Barbie (Ken, GI Joe) doll and a bag of rubber bands (same type).
(2) Collect as much data as you can in the time provided on the length of Barbie’s bungie jumps as you vary the number of rubber bands in the bungie chord. Record this data in the table of the worksheet provided and put on EXCEL sheet on website. Worth 10 points.
(3) Develop a mathematical model that best represents the data and can be used to determine how many rubber bands it would take to give Barbie, Ken, or GI Joe a safe but thrilling jump from a given height. Worth 20 points.
(4) Graph your data and regression line using an electronic application and put on your website. Worth 20 points.
(5) Video tape your “BIG DAY” bungie jumps and put on your website. Worth 20 points.

(6) Develop and summarize your project on a website. - Worth 80 points.
This must include the following:
(a) a paragraph about the data collection - be sure to name your Barbie/Ken/GI Joe doll.
(b) a paragraph summarizing the process that you used to develop your model.
(c) a paragraph about using your model on the big jump day.
(d) a paragraph on your improvements and suggestions for the competition.
(e) a picture of your group with your Barbie/Ken/GI Joe.
Remember a paragraph consists of 5 to 7 sentences!

Grading:
Students will be graded as a group. Your group grade will be based on your group’s successful completion of steps (1) to (6) on the directions. To receive full credit your group must produce a completed website with the above information. The maximum grade is 150 points. The group’s grade will be lowered by 5 points each day the write-up is late.

Bonus:
Students will compete for 10 bonus points. Each group will be taken to a location with a high drop point. Each group must determine the correct number of rubber bands to allow Barbie to get closer to the ground than any other group. Any group may have a second chance to allow Barbie to re-jump. However, if Barbie’s head touches the ground on the first or second jump, she is dead and that group is disqualified from the competition (also may have points deducted from their grade).
